December 14, 2009
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

So our last design-a-thon was a big success. We had a great showing and it was a lot of fun. So we decided to do it again.

We will hold it Monday December 14th in the WTCC at 6:00pm.

There will be a holiday theme. We will have some classic holiday films, holiday treats, and maybe even a holiday guest!

We will also be working on our next group contest, which I will post more information on shortly. We will be designing 2010 calendar posters. They will be 16×20, and we will vote for the best one. The best one will be printed, and distributed to the group. Stay tuned for more information.

So come with some ideas, some inspiration, and some holiday spirit!

New York City Bus Trip Friday December 11th

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Posted by: Jonathan Desrosiers.

December 11, 2009
6:30 amto11:30 pm

We have FINALLY worked out all of the details for our New York City trip. Here we go:

When: December 11th, 2009 – Meeting at the School of Technology at 6:30AM sharp.

Who: Anyone who wants to come! (Must be a JWU student however)

Where: We will be going to the Big Apple!

How much:
AIGA JWU members – $10
Other students – $15

Here are the places we will be visiting.

Central Booking

Central Booking is a space in Brooklyn, New York City which focuses on artist’s books and prints and their integration into the larger art world. They currently have 2 galleries and feature an extensive list of artists, designers, writers, and publishers.

Dress Code

Andre Andreev and G. Dan Covert have most likely been welcomed into your homes already; their work for the VMAs was beamed around the world in 2005 and 2006. Andreev and Covert started working together at California College of the Arts, then, with stints at Karlssonwilker, XLARGE, and odopod under their collective belt, the two took jobs at MTV while building a design empire at night. Equal parts big name branding, silk-screened concert posters, and renegade art projects, dress code is an impossibly prolific firm for two designers who’ve yet to turn 25. (Excerpted from dresscodeny.com)

AIGA Rhode Island and AIGA Johnson & Wales has a great relationship with Andre and Dan which has included having them speak at Johnson & Wales in the past, and Dress Code also hosted us during our first bus tour last year and we are excited to go back.

AIGA National Design Center

Located at 164 Fifth Avenue in New York City, the AIGA National Design Center serves as a base of operations for the national staff as well as a source of inspiration for members and the public. The AIGA National Design Center features a gallery open to the public during exhibitions throughout the year, an extensive library available by appointment to members only, the AdamsMorioka Archives Vault and a green roof.

Things to keep in mind:

RSVP: If you are interested in coming you can RSVP in a few ways.

  1. Email aigajwu@gmail.com with your name.
  2. Comment on this message with you full name saying that you would like to come.

We will be having a meeting on Monday December 7th. This meeting will be very important because we will be collecting money for the trip, and we will also be collecting the necessary information that we need from you.

If you can not attend this meeting you need to come to the WTCC between 11:30 and 3:30 on Monday or Wednesday.

You will also have to provide yourself with bus ride entertainment, snacks and beverages. We will probably stop for food at various points during the quest as well, so be prepared to have some extra money for nourishment.

If you have any questions at all do not be afraid to ask!

Congratulations Ben Hague

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Posted by: Jonathan Desrosiers.

Last spring we hosted an Relay For Life fundraiser called “Comedy For A Cure“.  It featured three local comedians who volunteered their evening and their material in an effort to raise money for our Relay For Life team. The event raised over $300 and was a huge success.

One of those comedians who helped make it a success was Ben Hague. Ben recently entered a contest on Fox Providence’s Rhode Show, a Today like morning show for Rhode Island residents. Ben was one of many contestants, but was selected to be one the finalists.

Over the course of about a month Ben competed with the 6 other finalists to see who would be selected as the Rhode Show’s newest co-host for a year’s time. The contestants had to blog, create videos, interview guests, and were assigned all kinds of different television related tasks. You can view Ben’s blog here.

Last night, the winner of the contest was revealed and that was Ben. We wanted to congratulate Ben for winning, and wish him the best of luck on this venture.

You can read more about Ben here and keep an eye out in the near future for the launching of Ben’s own website, www.benhague.com
