The poster contest is going to be extended through Thursday night. I only received 2 posters, so we want to give more opportunities for people to submit.

I know that our schedules are very busy, mine included, and we are not aiming to add stress to your days. However, we would like as much participation as possible with all of our events.

So we are going to extend this so that more people can get some posters in! New deadline is Thursday night October 1st at midnight.

Email a JPG of your poster to aigajwu@gmail.com. It does not have to be larger than 1500 pixels on the long edge of the image.

Don’t be afraid to email any questions or concerns, or just comment on one of our posts.

Humiliation Day, Thesaurus Day, Penguin Awareness Day, Bad Poetry Day, Eat a Cranberry Day.

These are all holidays that no one really knows about. And that is the purpose of this contest. You can view them all on HolidayInsights.com

The contest: Choose an obscure holiday that you want to promote. Take that holiday and make a poster for it. All posters submitted by the below deadline will be uploaded to the website, and the group will be invited to vote for their favorite poster.

The Prize: The person who receives the most votes will receive up to $15 off  of their bus trip to New York City.

The Guidelines:

• You may submit a maximum of 2 posters
• Posters must be 16×20
• Be 300 dpi
• Have the holiday name on each poster
• Must be submitted NO LATER THAN MIDNIGHT on Tuesday September 29th
• Illustrator is preferred, but Photoshop is acceptable as well, as long as all guidelines are met

What makes a brand stand out? Is there some magic that turns a simple script logo for a soda into the international graphic icon that is Coca-Cola, or makes us salivate over the latest product from Apple? Presented by Debbie Millman, partner at Sterling Brands and President of the AIGA, this presentation takes a deep dive into the influence branding has on our everyday lives, from branding ourselves and the world around us to the role branding plays in the products we buy and the way we live. Topics covered:

• The five historical periods of modern branding, highlighting brands that define each period
• How human evolution and population trends are linked with branding
• How psychology and behavioral rituals are linked with branding
• How technology has changed the way we interact with each other and with brands
• What it takes for modern brands to stand out in a crowded marketplace
• How branding connects with our most hard-wired, basic instincts

Join us for an evening of engrossing discussion and participate in our open forum after the presentation. You may never look at the world the same way again.

If you came to our first meeting, and liked what you heard, come to our second meeting.

This meeting will be more down to business. We will brainstorm things we would like to do this year for events, and other things that we would like to accomplish.

The meeting will be held in the Academic Center building, on the first floor in the Westminster Technology Conference Center (WTCC) at 6:00pm.

The meeting will last aproximately an hour, and right after we will be heading to Tazza Cafe for AIGA Rhode Island’s Design By Night (dXn).

On Monday September 14th we will hold our first AIGA meeting of the year. It will be an informational meeting aimed at letting you get a feel for what AIGA JWU is all about. Everyone is welcome. Bring your room mate, bring your friend, hell bring your parents….Actually, let’s not go that far, but seriously, bring some friends.

There is no obligation to the group if you show up to this meeting. It is merely an opportunity for you to meet the group’s current officers and members, see what we do, and see what we have planned for the year.

It will be held on the first floor of the Academic Center Building in the Westminster Technology Conference Center (WTCC) at 6:00pm. As soon as you enter the building, you take a right, and go through the office. But no worries! We will post signs everywhere.

If you show up and you like what you see and hear, and think we are kinda cool, mark our follow-up meeting on your calendar. Our follow-up meeting will be the following Monday, September 21, same time same place. For more information on that meeting, click here.
