posted by: Jonathan Desrosiers on January 11th, 2010

Recently we came to the aide of the Relay For Life planning committee at Johnson & Wales. They asked us for help creating a JWU specific Relay For Life logo. Below are the submissions that we received. The first one by Kyla Covert was selected, and will be used for all of JWU’s Relay For Life.

Congratulations Kyla!

Exciting Flash Player 10.1 Features

posted by: Robert Erskine on January 11th, 2010

Is anyone else excited for Flash Player 10.1?! I know I am. I’ve been following that gosh darn twitter and reading up on the latest features since the public “prerelease” on November 17, 2009, including the Adobe Max Web Conferences. There are a lot of new features on the way which will revolutionize the development of websites across multiple new hardware and mobile platforms alike.

The Support for New Platforms

With the release of 10.1 comes the support of a multitude of mobile devices, including; smartphones, netbooks, and other internet connected devices. Target mobile systems include (but are not limited to): Android 2.0, Microsoft Mobile 6.5, Palm webOS, Symbian S60 V5, as well as Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6. (Notice the lack of “iPhone” on the list…)

The consistent flash player is expected to deliver the most productive experience to users across these new operating systems and devices. This consistency reduces the cost of creating, testing and deploying, essentially the complete essence of development, to such devices.

Designed for Mobility

Mobile text input – Support for native device virtual keyboards with the TextField or inputText is a must if no physical keyboard is detected for mobile devices. The focused text field is centered in the visible region of the screen medium as to not obscure the keyboard or a random event such as an incoming call or a rotation of orientation.

Screen Orientation– Exported SWF content can adjust to different screen parameters depending on orientation landscapes. That is from portrait to landscape, which is consistent with other built-in applications on the device.

2010 Calendar Poster Competition

posted by: Jonathan Desrosiers on December 14th, 2009

December 4, 2009 6:00 pmtoJanuary 11, 2010 7:00 pm

At our design-a-thon on the 14th, one of the things you can work on is a 2010 calendar poster. We will vote after the holiday break on which one we like best, and we will get it printed for members to take home. These posters will be due the week we come back from break..

Here are the requirements of the poster:

  • Must be 16″ x 20″
  • Must be 300DPI
  • Contain every day of the 2010 year (I don’t say every month because you are not restricted to the typical monthly grid layout)
  • Must use images you are allowed to use (creative commons, purchased stock images, etc.).

These are just a few requirements, if we think of any more we will let you know!

Next Design-a-thon with a Holiday Theme

posted by: Jonathan Desrosiers on December 12th, 2009

December 14, 2009
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

So our last design-a-thon was a big success. We had a great showing and it was a lot of fun. So we decided to do it again.

We will hold it Monday December 14th in the WTCC at 6:00pm.

There will be a holiday theme. We will have some classic holiday films, holiday treats, and maybe even a holiday guest!

We will also be working on our next group contest, which I will post more information on shortly. We will be designing 2010 calendar posters. They will be 16×20, and we will vote for the best one. The best one will be printed, and distributed to the group. Stay tuned for more information.

So come with some ideas, some inspiration, and some holiday spirit!

Freshman Students Design “Make Think” T-shirts

posted by: Jonathan Desrosiers on December 7th, 2009

The 2009 AIGA National Design Conference’s theme was “Make Think”.

“Make Think focuses on taking on the dichotomy of designers as both the makers of artifacts and masters of integrative thinking, and exploring the contrast between tangible/physical solutions and the strategic/innovative ways that designers use their creativity to defeat habit. This issue is especially relevant today, as we position design and its competitive advantage to emerge stronger and even more essential to business and society coming out of the current economic downturn.”
- Taken from “How does AIGA come up with a theme for the design conference?” by Richard GrefĂ©

Passing this theme along to her students, Karyn Jimenez – Johnson & Wales University Design Professor and AIGA Rhode Island member – assigned a project to her students which she hoped would inspire them to “Make Think”.

“This project was assigned to my Digital Media Perspective Freshman Class. Each student was given a female and male t-shirt template and asked to hand draw a t-shirt design for AIGA that conceptually was around the idea of “Make Think” or actually contained the saying “Make Think”. Each student was given 2 days and presented their idea to the entire class.

Being the Digital Media Perspectives is a class where the computer is not used, It was an introduction for them into basic design practices involving, composition, color, hierarchy and hand drawn typography.”
- Karyn Jimenez

Here is a gallery with what the students designed.

The shirt design that wins the voting will be printed.
